If you're considering taking your file to a grocery store or pharmacy, STOP! The chances of ending up with a blurry, unsatisfactory print are high. We can’t pinpoint which stores will give you good or bad results, as it depends on several factors: the staff's knowledge, the printer’s condition, and the maintenance it’s received. If the printer is old, poorly maintained, or the operator is inexperienced, your mosaic may not come out as intended. While this might not be a big issue for regular photos, printing a mosaic made of thousands of small, sharp images requires a quality print shop to ensure the best results.

How to Choose the Right Print Shop

Think of print shops as falling into different grades—C, B, A, and the elusive S-grade.

C-Grade Print Shops: Grocery Stores and Pharmacies
These print shops are often located in the corners of grocery stores or pharmacies. The staff operating the printers changes frequently, so you might get someone experienced or someone new to the job. This inconsistency makes C-grade print shops the riskiest option for printing your mosaic. Additionally, their online platforms often can’t handle large file sizes, making it difficult to even place your order.

B-Grade Print Shops: Dedicated Printing Businesses
B-grade print shops focus solely on printing. They don’t sell groceries or medications, and their staff is generally more knowledgeable. A good example is a larger FedEx Office Print & Copy Center (formerly known as FedEx Kinkos). These shops are more reliable and have a higher chance of producing a sharp, high-quality print. Local small print shops also fall into this category, especially those catering to professional photographers. However, be cautious—some small shops might be closer to C-grade. If they can’t tell you the brand of ink they use, consider it a red flag.

A-Grade Print Shops: Top-Tier Quality
A-grade print shops are rare but worth the search. These shops handle your prints with care, often using gloves to avoid fingerprints. Their printers are usually housed in dust-controlled environments, and they offer color-calibrated monitors for accurate color checking. They can handle large file sizes and produce the sharpest possible prints, though this level of quality often comes at a higher price. Same-day service might not be available, but the results are well worth the wait.

S-Grade Print Shops: The Best of the Best
S-grade print shops are extremely rare, even in major cities. These shops have been recognized by the TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) for their exceptional print quality. While the quality might not be as sharp as what we produce, many people are satisfied with prints from these places. Remember, the true value of a mosaic lies in the love and effort you put into creating it.

If you live in a larger town with a FedEx Office nearby, this is a better option than grocery stores or pharmacies. You can still ask for a small proof print. The inkjet print shown in our video, for example, was produced at a local FedEx Office. Keep in mind that the final result still depends on the worker's expertise and the printer's condition.

For slightly better results, search for "professional print shop" on Google Maps and look for those that charge a bit more. In the competitive printing industry, higher prices often reflect better quality.

For Regular Users of A-Grade Print Shops

If you regularly use an A-grade print shop, continue with your usual process. Just be sure to check for potential issues like file size limitations and ensure your mosaic is printed at full resolution. 1. Recommended RAM memory to open with Photshop. If your workstation does have not enough RAM, then Photoshop will use a scratch disk, but your scratch disk must have at least the recommended amount of free space. Running off of scratch disk will make everything much slower. NVME SSD scratch disk is recommended if opening in a workstation without enough RAM. Disabling or lowering Undo levels is highly recommended if tight or not enough RAM is available.

2. PSB file is PhotoShop Big, an uncompressed file format which has maximum resolution of 90 gigapixels at 300,000 x 300,000. This file format requires use of Photoshop.
